“A silky smooth and virtually silent workhorse that delivers comfortable day-to-day riding”

Ebike Tips editor Tony Tompkins tested and reviewed the new Expression E+ in a 4/5 review.

His first ride was a hilly route around his local countryside, where he immediately felt the responsiveness of the SyncDrive Plus motor. Tompkins writes “Pedal lightly on flat terrain, and the motor gives a gentle boost. Start climbing and exerting effort, and the motor instantly responds in kind.”

As well as its impressive power output, Tompkins praised the SyncDrive motor for being silent and smooth. “The motor is also very refined — silky smooth and virtually silent. I particularly liked the way the motor didn’t just stop once you reached 15.5 mph. Instead, the electric assist gradually tapers off to 16.5mph, making the transition almost imperceptible.”

Moving onto the range, the EnergyPak 600Wh E-bike battery offers an excellent range that allows you to ride all day. “I consistently achieved around 50 miles per charge using the Smart Assist mode with a mix of hilly country terrain and urban riding.”

Giant’s E-bike batteries are manufactured by Panasonic who build these to the highest safety standards. With their overcharge protection, the charger automatically turns off once the battery is at 100%.

The Giant Expression E+ is a versatile E-bike that excels in urban environments. Tompkins claims the Expression has exceptional comfort, thanks to its well-balanced design, suspension components, and upright riding position.

“The riding position is classic sit-up-and-beg, with adjustable swept-back handlebars and a tall front end. This makes it perfect for riders who prioritise comfort. Add the big Schwalbe tyres, air front suspension and suspension seat post, and you’re treated to a plush ride that even the UK’s poor road surfaces can’t spoil.”

As well as the frame design and riding position, Tompkins claimed he was surprised by the handling. “Out on the road and up to speed, the Giant feels agile and sure-footed. It has an incredibly well-balanced feel, which inspires confidence. Even in the wet, I had no problem and didn’t feel the need to slow down as much as I normally would on greasy bends.”

To summarise, Tompkins wanted to test the Expression E+ in several conditions to see if this E-bike could handle different UK environments.

“Over the six-week testing period, I've used the Expression E+ 1 for shopping trips and rides down to the beach. It's taken everything in its stride from smooth tarmac to rough country lanes and even some light off-roading. The bike has remained stable and sure-footed even in typical British weather – from blustery winds to heavy downpours.”
